The 2-month checkup: what to expect and what to ask
This is usually the first visit with a substantial round of immunisations, which is what most parents are actually bracing for.
It is also the first real developmental conversation.
What this visit usually covers
- Growth plotted, and a full physical exam.
- Development: social smiling, following a face, lifting the head during tummy time.
- The first significant round of scheduled immunisations.
- Feeding and sleep patterns, and how the household is coping.
Worth asking
Take this in with you. The appointment moves faster than you expect, and the specific question gets a specific answer.
- What reaction is normal after today's shots, and what would mean calling? Fussiness and a low fever are common; get the line drawn for you.
- Is tummy time going well enough, and what should it look like at this age?
- Any flat spot on the head worth watching — this is the age it is usually first noticed.
- If feeding is still painful or difficult, say it plainly now rather than hoping it settles.
Ask whether to give anything before or after the shots for comfort, rather than deciding at home — for a baby this young the answer is specific to them.
