2 years checkup

The 2-year checkup: what to expect and what to ask

Two is the other visit where autism screening is specifically recommended, and where language gets measured properly for the first time.

It is also the appointment where the growth chart starts being read as a trajectory rather than a number.

What this visit usually covers

  • Developmental and autism screening.
  • Language: roughly fifty words and beginning to put two together is the usual reference point.
  • Growth, including BMI beginning to be tracked.
  • Behaviour, sleep, screen use and eating.

Worth asking

Take this in with you. The appointment moves faster than you expect, and the specific question gets a specific answer.

  • Where is she against the language thresholds, and what would you want to see by the next visit?
  • Is a hearing test worth doing regardless, given how much rides on hearing at this age?
  • Potty training — is she showing readiness, and what are the actual signs?
  • The eating has narrowed sharply. Is this ordinary picky eating or something to look at?

Where this comes from

Schedules vary by practice and by country, and yours may cover more or less than this. It is a companion for the appointment, not a substitute for it — the person in the room can see your child, and this page can't.
