The 9-month checkup: what to expect and what to ask

Nine months is one of the visits where a structured developmental screening is done rather than an informal chat.

That word frightens people more than it should — it is a questionnaire, and it is routine.

What this visit usually covers

  • A formal developmental screening, usually a standard questionnaire you may be asked to fill in beforehand.
  • Growth and physical exam.
  • Movement: sitting unsupported, crawling or shuffling, pulling to stand.
  • Communication: babbling with consonants, responding to name, gestures.

Worth asking

Take this in with you. The appointment moves faster than you expect, and the specific question gets a specific answer.

  • What did the screening actually show, item by item, rather than pass or fail?
  • If anything was borderline, what happens next and when would we recheck?
  • Is bottom-shuffling instead of crawling something to watch?
  • Now she pulls to stand, what needs to change around the house?

If you are worried about development, you do not need this appointment's permission to act — in the US a parent can request an early-intervention evaluation directly, with no referral.
